This week on the podcast I interviewed Jerry Jones.

Jerry is of the nation’s top expert on professional practice marketing with over 20 years experience, Jerry spends most of his time developing marketing and advertising strategies for his limited number of private clients and ClearPath Society Members.

His company, Jerry Jones Direct, is the #1 internationally recognized Membership-based boutique dental marketing and advertising firm focused on both patient retention & turn-key new patient solutions, with clients in the US, England, Australia and Canada.

While not a dentist, in 2003, Mr. Jones opened and today, still owns a “from-scratch” 4-doctor dental office in Salem, Oregon, Wellness Springs Dental of Salem. Through WSD of Salem, Jerry and his team conduct research and experiment with a variety of cutting-edge marketing and management techniques shared exclusively with Members of his ClearPath Society.

In short, Jerry knows what it takes to successfully own and operate a dental office in an area with high competition and in the ever-changing dental landscape. For example, during the 2008 financial collapse, his office maintained double-digit year-over-year growth.

On the podcast we discussed:

  • The journey that has led Jerry to where he is today and how he became specialized in the dental industry
  • Why he considers leadership to be the most important aspect of a thriving and profitable dental practice
  • Marketing is also extremely important and why dentists must know how to attract all the patients that they can serve
  • We plateau when we rise to the level of our skillset and we go no further, unless we seek out people who know more than us and can help us grow our skillset
  • Strategies to grow a start-up - Jerry shared a lot of great tips from going door-to-door to starting a local podcast on dentistry and health
  • Why Jerry still beleives in traditional marketing, for example, advertising in newspapers, direct mail
  • The importance of good copy, the power of words, to help people understand that you can offer a solution to their problems
  • Smart doctors invest in marketing before they invest in gadgets and incur other non-essential costs
  • If you are frustrated with your marketing look at your message as well as your media, more often than not the issue is your messaging

This week on the Delivering WOW podcast I spoke to Dr. Evelyn Samuel.

Dr. Samuel became a Dental Practice and Small Business Efficiency coach by chance. After achieving her life-time goal of becoming a Dentist, she set out to provide excellence within her chosen field. She had a unique experience after her residency. She worked in many different types of practices as a contractor and saw first-hand that although many of the owner dentists were excellent clinicians, they didn't have systems in place to run their businesses effectively. In fact, she continued to see the trend of dentists who were hands-off with their businesses, many times hearing them say, "I just want to do dentistry."

When Dr. Samuel opened her first dental practice from scratch, she discovered she had a gift for running the business and even hired business coaches before opening her doors and 'hanging her shingle.' She and her team continuously read books on and took courses to enhancing the experience of her practice's customers/patients.

Years later after helping many colleagues set up/run their practices and publishing a book, '100 Things I HATE/Love About Dentistry: A professional's guide to efficiency profitability and sanity!' with practical vignettes of how to run an effective business, Dr. Samuel established her Efficiency Coaching Firm.

On the podcast we discussed:

  • Evelyn’s journey to where she is today
  • How she gained unique experience working in many different practices before setting up in private practice, and how she realized many practices lacked systems
  • The lack of education in dental schools on being a CEO and a business owner
  • How important it is to know everything about your practice – you shouldn’t do everything but you should know about it
  • The most important systems that dentists need to focus on first
  • How effective it can be to role play out systems with your team
  • How to get your team on-board with systems
  • How to get started with developing systems
  • Evelyn’s new course – How to Start a Practice From Scratch
  • Getting started with opening a dental practice and why you should work out what your life goals are and ensure your practice aligns with them
  • Techniques for achieving our goals and the importance of learning about business and having a coach
  • What efficiency means to Evelyn

Evelyn can be found at info@drevelynteaguesamuel.com and you can head to https://efficiencyinstitute.com/ to find information about her How to Start a Practice From Scratch course and virtual workshops.

This week on the Delivering Wow podcast I’ve recorded a solo episode on the topic of email marketing and funnels.

Email marketing really can explode your practice growth, and this can be achieved by having an effective, automated funnel in place.

I’m so excited to announce that we have just launched our Funnel Mastery course in the WOW U – it’s free to all of our U members! So, it seemed timely to record an episode on this topic.

On the podcast I discussed:

  • An example of a really effective funnel for dental implants
  • The many benefits of email marketing funnels and how they take people on a journey of trust
  • How to setup a funnel for your practice

Funnels enable you to build trust with people. The whole process can be automated and it can provide you with a consistent number of new patients…without you even having to pick up the phone.

This week on the Delivering Wow podcast I interviewed Michael Arias and I got to talk all about my favorite subject – marketing!  Specifically, we talked about ground marketing.

Michael is a really good friend of mine. He’s the host of the Dental Marketer Podcast and he’s doing amazing things to help dentists with ground marketing.

Michael is from Texas where he graduated with a degree in Nutrition. He helped to start up two companies before moving to California – where he helped to start up another company working as a nutritionist. A client of his happened to be a Dental Consultant and he assisted him with his marketing. This led to working with more dentists – bringing in new patients to their practices. He went from bringing in a couple of patients daily …to overbooking the doctor's schedule, three months in advance, with quality patients!

Michael has worked with several dentists, dental groups, dental consultants, and agencies. He loves educating anyone who is interested in how to market their dental practice.

On the podcast we discussed:

  • Michael’s background and how he got into dental marketing
  • What ground marketing is and some great examples
  • Ideas for forming partnerships with local businesses in order to attract new patients
  • Digital marketing is very important but it shouldn’t be everything
  • Why it’s important to stand out as a dentist and have a “story”
  • The importance of having a strong online and offline presence and how they can complement each other
  • The role that personality plays in being successful with ground marketing
  • What start-ups or practices with available staff can do with regards to ground marketing
  • How Michael can help dental practices and the service that he offers
  • How to get started with ground marketing

On the podcast this week I had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Emily Letran. Dr. Letran is a general dentist who owns two multi-specialty group practices in Southern California.  She received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from UC Riverside in three years. She is a graduate of UCLA School of Dentistry (Dean’s Apollonian Scholarship) and received her Master of Science in Oral Biology from UCLA at the same time in four years. After graduation, she participated in the General Practice Residency at Loma Linda VA Medical Center and a mini-residency at Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center (both in CA.).

As a mother of three, Dr. Letran creatively balances work, family life, after-school life and her personal life as a growing entrepreneur.  She continuously takes courses in clinical dentistry, practice management and marketing, attending multiple business forums to improve her skills to better serve patients.  Her favorite activities include reading, creative writing, and “hanging out” with her three children - whether playing tennis, watching Netflix or enjoying Starbucks together.

Dr Letran is an author of several books. “From Refugee to Renaissance Woman” shares her story coming to the US as a refugee at 13 years old, and her newest book, “Commit to Embracing Your Big Life” offers insights and strategies to building a strong business.

Dr. Letran is also a Certified High Performance Coach, helping business professionals achieve highest performance in personal and business life, streamline business and increase profits, winning back time from work so they can enjoy that time with their family, children and pursue their passion.

Dr. Letran is actively involved in community services, sponsoring multiple local school and charity events. She created the Emily Letran Foundation dedicated to providing basic dental care to veterans and families of disadvantaged background, including the monthly Free Dentistry Day, where she and her dental team work to provide free dentistry for the less fortunate in area communities.  Her Foundation is raising funds to attain a mobile dental unit where she can carry her services to outreached communities. The Foundation will also provide scholarships for high performance coaching to help business owners from disadvantaged background get a jump start in growing and accelerating their businesses.

With such an interesting background and life there is little wonder I was so pleased to talk to Emily on my show.

She worked as an associate for her father for 18 years before buying her own practice in 2004. Since that time she has built the practice, moved the practice and expanded the practice.

She started out with one computer, about 200 paper charts and two employees. She now has 2,500 patients, 18 computers and 12 employees in 13 years. Her collections have more than quadrupled in those 13 years and she has no paper charts.

Her passion is marketing her dental practice and sharing ideas with her colleagues. She enjoys going to lots of dental CE courses especially when it pertains to the business of dentistry. Dr. Rief has started lecturing to numerous dental study clubs on how she runs her successful dental practice and has consulted with dental practices also. In this week’s episode I interviewed Dr. Shakila Angadi.

Dr. Shakila Angadi is the owner of Palmer Smile Design in Easton, PA. As a mother, dentist and wife, she has strived to achieve balance in her personal and professional life for many years.

After practicing dentistry for over 10 years, Dr. Angadi realized that the empathetic communication and self-awareness techniques were the key to expanding her practice exponentially.

After being coached by leaders in dentistry and emotional intelligence, she was determined to expand her professional expertise to combine the two. Bridging the gap between professionalism and emotional agility, she is working on many projects to help dentists (and women) communicate and react with emotional awareness to improve the quality of their lives.

We discussed:

  • Why hitting rock bottom was the best thing that could have happened to Shakila and the mindset shift that it takes to bounce back and up-level in almost all areas of life
  • How perfectionism and the fear of failure can stifle creativity and problem solving – and why this is very prevalent problem amongst dentists
  • The importance of having a mindset of admitting that you don’t know everything and seeking help where you need it
  • Why investing in yourself is so important and how Shakila invested in herself
  • How essential taking care of our minds and exercising our mental skills is in order to identify emotions and be open and aware of our surroundings
  • The changes that Shakila has made in her dental practice to foster an environment based on positivity, empathy, gratitude and fantastic communication
  • Social media strategies and how Shakila has used social media to grow her practice by attracting like-minded people in both her patients and team members

Shakila runs a Facebook Group called Emotional Intelligence for the (modern) Mom – a group where like-minded moms (not exclusively dentists) share tools and tips for shifting mindset to improve their lives.

In this interview with Michael Stelzner, I share why Facebook Marketing is so powerful for local businesses, including dental offices.

Why Local Businesses Need to Go Beyond Review Sites

If your new patients hang out on Facebook, that’s where you need to be. People aren’t hanging out on Yelp or Google. Most people check Facebook first thing in the morning, between daily tasks, and in the evening. That’s why Facebook marketing needs to be your focus.

Creating the right content is important. A lot of businesses post information about how great they are and share a lot of stock content, but that really doesn’t work. Local businesses need to share their story and what makes their business unique. For example, if you have a plumbing company, what are you offering that’s different from everyone else?

To compete with photos of kids, community happenings, and articles, it's important to create engaging posts that connect with people and make them want to click, including content about community impact and what you do to change patients’ lives.

We also discuss the importance of gathering patient testimonials and running video campaigns as well as the importance of knowing your target audience.

It's important to be specific with your targeting.

Even with the right content and target audience, you can’t just put up a post and hope people see it. You need to be strategic. Retarget to people who have been to your website, your existing customers, Facebook lookalikes, and so on. To get conversions, you need to make the most of Facebook’s marketing tools.

Focus your marketing on what sets your business apart from competitors.

To start, determine what makes people want to choose your business and not someplace else.

Anytime you’re marketing on Facebook or elsewhere, you begin by highlighting little features that make your business special. Figure out what makes your business unique and focus on that in your marketing messages.

Your marketing stories can target extremely specific sets of people, especially a very warm audience.

For example, in my practice, I ran a Facebook ad for teeth whitening that has provided a 5,000% ROI. Instead of simply targeting people within 10 miles of the practice, I showed the ad to women who met specific criteria. The teeth whitening ad appeared to women who are engaged, are between the ages of 24 and 55, and have interacted with the dental practice in some way.
